A Soul as Cold as Frost by Jennifer Kropf

A Soul as Cold as Frost follows 16 year old Helen who lives a completely average life when she bumps into a stranger on the street who gives her a gift which will turn her world upside down.

This leads Helens life into a whole new world of adventure where she meets the charming Zane who acts as a guardian of sorts for her while she tries to fight her way through this crazy new life she has been plunged into while trying to avoid the wrathful Mara Rogue.

Kropf has managed to put a spin on the usual story of a seemingly average person, Helen was exactly that, completely average, and remains so throughout the book except for her extreme courage and determination in completing the task she has been set to deliver the orb to its rightful resting place.

Kropf creates a unique world in which this story takes place, the world of Winter, which is only accessibly from our world once a year upon the convergence, and the residents of it are not visible to ordinary humans. The visuals created in this world are breath-taking and I particularly enjoyed the person sized Christmas bows hanging in boxes above Hollytown which reminded me somewhat of the extravagant Christmas decorations from The Grinch!

There are a variety of creatures and characters we are introduced to and I feel that we were given exactly as much back story as we needed for each to make them relevant to the story but so as not to detract from it. If you’re looking for a wintery read with a fantasy twist I’d definitely recommend it, and I’ll be looking to read the next one also.
