Ganoran: Trials of Chadonia by Waltes Yeates

The first book in the Soul of Ejana series begins by setting the scene. Ejana is a land which has been enjoying a prosperous peace for many years following an intense war which was ended by the victory of Queen Kamra. Every year the residents of this continent hold a celebration honouring their departed queen where delegates from the various tribes are sent to the capital. Being selected to attend by ones tribal leaders is a great honour and a source of pride for our main protagonists Chadonia, Rica and Alyna.

At the annual Kamra gathering a great tragedy befalls the people where their queen is slain throwing her young and inexperienced daughter into the role. I really enjoyed the opening of this novel as I feel it really did a good job of introducing a new fantasy realm while also managing to differentiate it from those you may have visited in the past. The author makes great use of descriptive language and really does paint a brilliant picture of the different lands our characters travel across and the situations they find themselves in.

Another aspect of the novel I found quite gratifying was the strong female leads, I am a sucker for any novel with a strong female lead but in this one you really are spoiled for choice. It was great seeing them grow into their roles and meeting the various challenges they were faced with. There were various action scenes throughout the novel and these were also well written and easy to follow, which I think plays a big part in this kind of story.

The more fantasy books I read the more I come to appreciate a good map and I really liked both the view of the full world and a close up of the continent of Ejana. I feel that this book is a safe recommendation for anyone who enjoys fantasy with strong female leads and good character development and it is definitely well set up for the next novel in the series.
